Shaggy Fabric Wreath Tutorial & Giveaway

A New Look! and a New Shop!
means it's time for a
Giveaway!
In honor of Beyond the Screen Door's new look
and the Grand Opening of
I'm giving away a Shaggy Fabric Wreath Kit!
(See giveaway details below)

I'm sure you've all see some version of this wreath. Coffee filters, fabric, flowers, etc. I chose fabric, of course.

I'd been wanting to make one of these wreaths for quite a while. And I knew I wanted to make it in shades of neutrals. So, over the past few months every time I had fabric scraps in a color I thought I could use, I tossed them in a plastic bag. By the time I got around to starting on this wreath I had collected quite a stash.
I chose to use 3" squares of fabric for this project. I grabbed my stash and started cutting. I ended up using 10 different fabrics. The fabrics included linen, burlap, cotton, scrim, some with tone-on-tone patterns, some solid, all in shades of tan, taupe, white and ivory. When finished it took 700-750 squares or 75 @ 3" squares of each fabric.
Before I started I wrapped an 18" straw wreath with strips of scrim to cover the straw. I would suggest scrim, tulle or any other very thin fabric for this step. A thicker fabric would make it too hard to push in the fabric squares.
This was my tool of choice for pushing in the fabric squares. Why? No reason except it was handy. You could use a screwdriver or any tool with a pointed end.
At first I didn't think I needed the hot glue but quickly realized the fabrics came out too easily without the glue.
To begin I chose a spot, slapped on a dab of hot glue and then pushed the fabric square into the straw.
I started with one color and randomly placed it around the wreath, making sure I was covering the top, inside and outside of the wreath. Then I'd move on to the next color and repeat. This way I tried to not get too many of the same colors in one spot or directly next to each other.
When I finished my wreath I realized I had enough fabric to make several more. I decided to pass this opportunity along to you!
If you'd like to make this wreath but don't want to take the time to shop for fabrics, hunt through fabric scraps or tediously cut 750 square of fabric...
you can now win (or purchase) a complete kit from

Each Shaggy Wreath Kit contains:
750 -3" fabric squares in 10 different fabrics
Tulle to wrap the wreath
Burlap ribbon hanger
and instructions.
(does not include 18" straw wreath)
But just in case you'd like to put together you own kit or you'd rather use a different color scheme here's what you'll need:

1/4yd each of 10 different fabrics
OR 1/2yd each of 5 different
burlap or ribbon for a hanger
tulle or scrim to wrap wreath
18" straw wreath
hot glue
several hours to cut fabrics
about 2 hours to assemble wreath
This is really an easy project just a bit time consuming.
I just love the fluffy end result!

  1. My favorite item is so hard to pick! I love everything, but I guess if I must then it would be the red and gold drapes, but then maybe it's the ones with the black and white topper or the "Love" pillow - I just have to pick multiples!

  5. Good morning Sonya!! Okay, I sat down to finally peek into your workroom after a busy sewing morning here.. and am DELIGHTED with a giveaway post!! LOL Love the shaggy wreath. So much. And congrats getting your new shop online, I really like it! I am partial to damask and coffee sacks, perhaps equally, so picking a fave is difficult. I am gonna go with the burlap table topper, the one with a patchwork of coffee sacks. SOOO creative and textural, I just love it.
I re-posted your FB link. Now I am off to find your work room post! LOL
    Have a beautiful week. xoxoxo

  36. I LOVE this wreath! I had been rackin my brain to figure out what I was going to do with my straw wreath that I has covered...I has intended on covering with yoyos but soon realized I stink at making yoyos! I will have to switch out my fabric as mine is too "thick" but am very excited about this idea! I would love to win the drawing (becaue those are the colors that I would use and let's face it...all the cutting would be tedious!) but even if I don't win, I'm still making the wreath! WooHoo!!! Thanks for the great idea! Amy aafulcher@yahoo.com
