Teenage Personalities! You gotta love 'em! For me, this is the number one aspect to keep in mind when designing a teenager's space. You want them to feel comfortable yet inspired by the things around them. And yet, sometimes this leads to interesting decor choices!
Walking the line between Designer and Mom of a teenage son is not always an easy task. But I think we've reached a nice compromise here.
I think the style of these window treatments is a great choice for a boy's bedroom! They are floor length panels (which I love) and made from a heavy red twill and tan corduroy. The corduroy is actually a duvet cover which I found on clearance at Target. The red was a remnant. Each panel is comprised of 4 pieces of alternating fabrics. I divided the final length of the panel by 3 to determine the length of each piece. The ratio approximately 2/3 (top) to 1/3 (bottom).
The rod is a hollow bamboo pole from Hobby Lobby. I think I paid under $5 for this rod (maybe less with 40% coupon! Still working on ideas for the finials.). The loops are actual leather belts and faux leather remnants I braided and then mixed and matched to form the loops.
This little vignette represents several different decades and demonstrates the range of my son's interests. 1940's - Guns I found the shadow box frame at Marshall's on clearance for $5. I removed whatever ugly insides it came with and replaced it with these two toy guns that once belonged to my Dad and his brother. One is metal and the other hand carved wood. Priceless! 1960's - Bob Every teenage boy who loves music needs a picture of Bob in his room! I guess. 2000's - Baseballs & Books Special baseballs found a home in this glass jar from Wal-mart. And a couple of great books! We are a family of readers!
And then there's the love of Hockey! Which he inherited from his Dad!
We found this very cool PBish nightstand at TJ Maxx (in girl colors) which we promptly painted to match his room! Krylon's Banner Red Gloss, Hosta Leaf, Woven Tapestry and Global Blue. Notice the cord sticking out of the last drawer? It was attached to the longest conglomeration of stuff you have ever seen...I gave up trying to untie it!
Big boyTOYS!
And his collection of boxes, which you saw yesterday. This collection is super special. Each box belonged to a great-grandfather! Two are tool chests and one a little hand made decorative box. Notice the padlocks! Not one but two, to guard untold treasures!
If you know me and my love of fabrics, you'll not be surprised that I had to add pillows!
One of the things I love to do when dressing a bed is mix store bought and custom. The striped shams and dark brown quilt are all TJ Maxx finds. I then used this chocolate brown and blue Hawaiian print to make a couple of custom pillows! Thank you Tommy Hilfiger for making Hawaiian prints popular for boys! The Taz pillow used to be a sweatshirt!
In the end, I think this room shows my son's personality in a way I can live with. He likes it, therefore I like it! At least I like it when it looks like this! I'm glad I have pictures, because it won't look like this again until we have company! Surely, I not the only Mom who has messy kids! I hope not!
Blessings!

What a fantastic room. So full of life and color, just like a boys room should be. Great job, and thank you so much for joining in. Debbie
ReplyDeleteGreat room! It's definetly a guy's room, but it looks well put together. Love it!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine just sent her son to college. She is now decorating his old room the way she wants. Up to this point the room was his - not her taste at all. I think it is so important to let kids have a say in how their rooms look. It gives them a chance to express themselves even if it is not completely your taste. Looks like you struck a nice balance here.
ReplyDeleteMy son's room is the same {books, guitars - plural, amp, Colts stuff on one wall} and he is 20 now, Sonya! He had a lot of input when we redid it several years ago; he and I worked together on it. We have similar colors to your son's except I had made cornice boards and used a red, tan and bit of green lion shield fabric. Two years ago we changed out fabric roman shades {that had seen better days} to bamboo shades.
ReplyDeleteLove the nightstand and all his cool accessories! Suits him just perfectly. :)
ReplyDeleteLovin' the green walls with all the brown and red. Really fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove the room colors and all of the creative storage!
ReplyDeleteGreat boys room- I think they're harder to do than girls! Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI love all of the mixes in here, Sonya. From the sports, to the fabrics, collections--and it all looks great together. The window treatments could be a post by themselves.
ReplyDeleteLove the way it all came together! I have four boys and I know how hard it can be to decorate their rooms :)

Hi! Sonya! Thank you so much for linking up to my "Inspiration Friday" party! I love your son's room and it is so inspiring to me to see that a teenagers room can look cool and yet still warm and inviting! I have a 7 yr. old son so I'm taking notes! :-)

I have been working on my son's room and did a post about it last month so I totally understand where you are coming from on your son's room!! I think you did an awesome job of decorating but keeping with his personality and the fact that it is his room. I tried to do that with my guy and the guitar "stuff"!! Love the curtains ALOT!!
ReplyDeleteWow ... your son's room is really great! I am actually in the process of decorating my 22 year old (still at home) son's room. I actually came across your blog because of your curtain designs. I am just learning to sew myself (it's never too late, I hope). You are extremely talented and your blog is inspiring so I'm your newest follower. Please pop over and visit me sometime, but forgive my sewing skills (lol).

Now that is one cute teen boys room!! I have three daughters and never had to deal with boy stuff but wow does his room look clean and tidy. It's awesome. Love all the unexpected touches and I see the young man likes Pottery Barn. Now that's a win in my book.
ReplyDeleteSo many creative ideas in one room! I love the curtains and the changing the pattern of the fabric is brilliant. And the way you hung the curtains..... now that's thinking outside the box!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job and thanks for sharing :D
love it
