Don't you just love the look of mercury glass? There's something so appealing about it's aged quality. Well, this week I painted a few pieces to look like mercury glass and I'm so pleased with the results.

I've seen several tutorials on painting mercury glass but most recently was a post by Kristin at My Uncommon Slice of Surburbia. Her post came at just the right time to motivate me. That and Thanksgiving being at my house.
I've known Thanksgiving was going to be at my house for months. So when was I working on my centerpieces? Wednesday!
So after a trip to Hobby Lobby to purchase a pricey can of Kylon's Looking Glass Paint ($12.99 for a tiny 6oz can! - less my 40% off coupon) I gathered up any random pieces of glass I could find.
Using the extra table I had set up for Thanksgiving, my handy-dandy worn out cutting board as a back drop and Kristin's directions on the computer in the background, I got to work.
*This paint has a very strong smell. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation if you're using it inside like I was! Why was I painting inside when it was an absolutely gorgeous day? No clue!
This project was easy-peasy and fun! I painted about 10 votives plus a couple other pieces and was very pleased with the results! Makes you want to start searching the house for anything else you can paint! I'm definitely going to use this product again.
Thank you, Kristin, for the motivation as well as the directions!
Since I was too busy making last minute mercury glass, last minute place mats and last minute runners for my tables, (not to mention cleaning and cooking) this is my Thanksgiving post...a day late.
I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day full of family, friends and God's many blessings. For each of these things, including You my Screen Door friends, I am truly Thankful!

ReplyDeleteVery pretty, Sonya! I'm sure the can of paint is worth it to get your own mercury glass look as opposed to buying real pieces. I'll bet they look great for Christmas too!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! You sound like me...waiting until the last minute & having a "must do" idea. I think sometimes I do better when the pressure's on. I'm sure everything was wonderful!
