My daughter, Kaleigh, found this burlap sack at an antique mall in Oklahoma City, called The Rink. She knew immediately she wanted it made into a pillow. She loved the colors used of the graphics. This coffee sack came from Manizales, Columbia. It even came with a few coffee beans still in it!
The sack measured approximately 36" long x 28" wide. I debated on whether to make several pillows or two big euros using another fabric on the back side. But in the end decided to just make one large euro using the main graphic from each side of the sack.
I cut the burlap 24" x24" centering each of the graphics. Because this burlap had such a large, open weave I lined each piece with a solid cotton fabric.
After sewing the two burlap pieces, right sides together, I reinforced the opening by folding the seam allowance down and sewing a zig-zag stitch. This also held the lining in place as well.
I top stitched around the outer edge of the pillow in a bright pink that matched the graphics on the burlap.
Here you can see a bit of the lining.
I decided to use poly-fil instead of a pillow form. This pillow is mainly for looks. The burlap is soooo scratchy that no one would want to lounge around on it anyway so using a pre-made pillow form seemed wasteful.
Scratchy and hairy. I felt like I needed to shave it!
This was my first project using an existing grain/coffee sack but I love the way it turned out!
And Kaleigh loved it, too!

Absolutely darling! I've heard good things about The Rink and must get there soon. Thanks a bunch for sharing your thought process here, I cant wait to try it!! And kudos for passing on your "eye" to your daughter. Happy New Year from a fellow Okie!
ReplyDeleteThat looks fantastic. I have a couple of coffee sacks and haven't known what to do because of the itchy factor. You've got me thinking now.
ReplyDeleteYAY! I love it! I'll have to send you a picture of it in my house, currently it's on my couch but I'm sure it will be moved around many times :) Thank you mommy!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I have a couple of sacks and felt they would be too stiff for pillows but your pillow is great! Hmmm, I'm already rethinking...
ReplyDeleteDrop by my blog soon...have a gift-away going on!!

The colors are great, Sonya! I can see why she was drawn to it. It does look scratchy! I did little pillows yesterday and felt that way just from the fiberfil!
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe you made one of these. I was considering making a pillow with my coffee sack, but couldn't get past the scratchiness, myself. I know Kaliegh will love it, the colors are great.
ReplyDeleteThat turned out really, really cute. I like that the colors are a little more muted than some of the brighter ones I have seen. You did a great job- xo Diana

Another beautiful pillow. I know they are scratchy but such eye candy!! Happy New Year Sonya, may you have a blessed year.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful....very pretty!
ReplyDeleteLove the graphics. I covered a footstool in a coffee bean burlap bag. I've been afraid to try pillows as they are itchy and seem to always smell burlapy (hmm not really a word but you know what I mean). Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! How blessed your girls are to have you as a mother! If I were them, I'd probably be having you making things for me all the time. (I love the way Kaleigh's name is spelled.)
ReplyDeletepretty stinkin cute! Too bad this kinda burlap is so scratchy!

This post couldn't come at a better time. First ... LOVE your pillow! Second ... just today I saw a burlap pillow in a store that I want to recreate so your instructions are very timely. Third ... love your manicure. Fourth ... I'm your newest follower, found you at Inspiration Friday.
ReplyDeleteI just did one out of a rice bag, and I love it too. Yours turned out so cute!
ReplyDeleteSo fun, I love reusing these!
ReplyDeleteI love it! What a great find! Great job!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Sonya! Still ever-talented and looks as though you've passed some of your design saavy onto your beautiful daughter!
ReplyDeleteI hate burlap! BUT my daughter also snagged me 4 giant coffee bags from a local coffee shop and brought them to me to use...your project has given me the courage to go ahead and make something out of them...love the pillow! I also thought of framing the graphic part, that way I wont get that itchy fuzz all over my sewing machine! We will see...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove the pillow! Great job as always......
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! Love it!

I love it, Sonja! I think adding the lining is perfect. The colors are "happy" to me...not drab.

ReplyDeleteI love burlap, and this grain sack is really cute. That hairy picture of the burlap kind of reminds me of my hubs chest. Scratchy! But oh so nice. Love your nail shot, mine never look that good, I have to use "touch-Up" in Picasa. Thanks for sharing how you made/sewed it. Great idea. Thanks for sharing at Sunday's Best and all your inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThe colors are fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
