Multi-Fabric Table Runner Tutorial

Many of us love the idea of mixing multiple fabrics in a room.  Whether your style is neutral or full of color, the mix of patterns and textures is one aspect of making a visually interesting space.

Maybe you love this concept but would rather keep it to a smaller accent piece.  Here's your chance!

In my previous post about this runner I talked about mixing fabrics. Here's my process for constructing the runner.

The first thing I do is decide on the dimensions for the runner and draw a sketch. This runner will be 72" before the end ruffles and 13" wide.

This was my original sketch with finished dimensions. I changed the pattern slightly as I went along. (Actual cutting measurements are listed below.)

With my sketch in mind I decide which fabrics will go where. This can be determined by the size of the fabric scraps and/or if I like the way the fabrics look next to each other.

I chose this red toile as the center. I often prefer a non-directional pattern for the center...one that looks the same from either side of the runner. But I decided to work with the toile anyway because I love this fabric!

The ribbon trim was attached next, then the black check. From here each side of the runner is identical.

I pieced the next 4 fabrics together just like you would a quilt.

Making sure to iron each seam flat.

The finished length of the runner is approximately 84" by 13" wide. (72" before ruffles)  I used a 1/2" seam allowance. I'm listing the "cutting" measurements for each piece by fabric description.

1-red toile - 25" long x 14"wide
2-blk/cream check - 7x14,
2-brown floral - 16x5.5,
2-red leopard - 9x5,
2-brown paisley - 9x6,
2-red/gold/blk - 8x9.5,
2-tan chenille - 4x14
2-tiny black check - 2x22 = 1/2" ruffle @1.5x's fullness
2-brown/red paisley - 13x29 = 6" ruffle @ 2x's fullness

The ruffles were sewn closed on each end, gathered and attached.  Tiny black check first, then the brown & red paisley.
When the top is completely pieced together I added three different braid trims to the patchwork piece. (see below) These trims were top stitched on.  You can also use trim with a seam allowance (like the ribbon trim). In this case, sew trim in before piecing together.  At this time I top stitched the ribbon trim in place to keep it laying in the right direction.

With right sides together I sewed the apple green lining fabric leaving an opening at one end.  After turning right side out and ironing I sewed closed the opening.  I love the way the green is such an unexpected pop of color for the lining!

Please don't hesitate to e-mail me if you would like to try this and have a question.  I'm still working on my tutorial skills!

If you decide you'd rather buy than create...You're in luck! This runner is available in the Home Decor Shop!  Custom orders are always welcome!

UPDATE:  THIS RUNNER HAS SOLD!

Have a Blessed Day!

  1. Hi Sonya! I just wrote you a big long note, but for some reason it did not go through. So let's start again.

Your beautiful, rich, colorful runner is just stunning. I was absolutely enthralled with and inspired by this post.

I will certainly be making this for myself and I think I'll make one as a Christmas gift.

Your use of different fabrics (LOVE THE TOILE!) textures, patterns and trim makes this a true masterpiece!

I am hosting a new meme in a couple of weeks called Tutorials, Tips and Tidbits and your runner tutorial would be a wonderful entry!
What a delightful and creative time I have spent with you!
