A few days ago (or was it weeks?) I promised you the details for the Cat in the Hat accent pillow from Judy's guest room. Well, here you go!
We started out with two pillow shams from Pottery Barn Kids. We used one on the bed and then used the extra one to create an additional pillow.
We made a 14 x 20 accent pillow. We're using this pillow in a small desk chair in the room. Taking the main character design from the sham, I cut out the Cat and pieced him back together to form a 14"h x 10"w center piece. The two sides pieces are 14" x 5.5". When sewn together these form a 14x20 front for the pillow.
Not shown in this picture, (but shown below) is a small 5/8" flange made from the green check fabric from the back of the Pottery Barn sham. The flange was used as an accent between center piece and the two red corduroy pieces.
Next I cut several pieces, 4" in length, from 1" wide turquoise grosgrain ribbon.Folding the ribbon in half to create a loop, I then sewed the ribbon loops together to form a sort-of hand made loop "fringe".
Later, I layered additional loops to make the "fringe" thicker. The fringe was then sewn to the front face of the pillow on each end.
The back of the pillow was made envelope style from the red corduroy. The pillow closes with two ties made from the leftover green check fabric.
I really like the way this little guy turned out. The ribbon "fringe" is such a great accent. It's a fun addition to just about anything...from a pillow to a valance! I even used it on a Christmas Stocking! (shamless plug!)
