Mixing Custom and Ready Made in a Guest Room

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!  Terrell from FrouFrouDecor is the lucky winner of the DonnaLeota giveaway! Congratulations, Terrell!

I recently had the opportunity to help a friend redesign her guest room. This guest room has the special privilege of being designed with grandchildren in mind!

Judy found an adorable line of Cat in the Hat bedding from Pottery Barn Kids that she fell in love with.  She bought the striped quilt and 2 standard size pillow shams. (One we used on the bed and the other we cut up to make an accent pillow.)
I feel one of the best ways to make a space interesting is to mix your ready made pieces with custom pieces.  If you don't have the option of having custom items made, then think "outside the box" and find items from other stores to mix together. (One of the best stores for finding un-matchy items is TJ Maxx)
Just don't take the easy way out and buy everything to match from the same retailer!
The quilt from Pottery Barn contains many different fabrics and colors.  We chose to focus on navy blue, red and green to use in our accent fabrics.

I made a simple droop valance with skinny tabs that hangs from a ORB rod with green finials found at Pottery Barn Kids. The valance is a deep red corduroy trimmed across the bottom with a 3" band of dusty navy blue twill. (Fabric from Pottery Barn called Harbor Blue) The small flange of accent fabric is a tiny green check taken from the back side of the extra pillow sham.
Since we did not need two pillow shams, I took the second sham and created this accent pillow.  Details on how to make this pillow coming soon.

In addition to the valance and accent pillow, we added two 24" red corduroy pillows made with a 3" navy flange (only one shown.) and a box pleated bed skirt from the same harbor blue fabric.

The navy and turquoise fish sheets and fluffy green blanket are from Target. Judy is still shopping for additional lamps and accessories. But the room is coming together nicely!
What a fun and playful space for her grandchildren!

Anyone thinking ahead to the next space for your child? Grandchild?

Have a Blessed Day!

  2. That is fun, Sonya! I love that bedding set ~ Dr. Seuss is perfect for a spare bedroom that will be used by grandchildren. Love how you used the extra sham. I talk to my clients about mixing custom and ready-made items as well. I think they like the unique-ness factor without having to spend a lot of money.

  5. Hi Sonya! What an absolutely darling room! How perfect to have a fun space like that to welcome the grandkids. I absolutely adore that pillow with the silk ribbon fringe and can't wait for the tutorial and how to make that one! And I totally agree about mixing custom with store-bought...it really does just give a space it's own unique feel. And, TJ's is totally a great place to find those special items. It's my home away from home! :-)

  18. The grandkids will love that room. Did you know that Robert Kaufmann has a line of Dr. Seuss fabric that came out recently? It's very cute and could be used to make some great accessories for the room.

  23. The Cat in the Hat bedding is brilliant, just a shame there wasn't anything like this around when I was a kid.

Bedding like this really does add fun to a kids room.
