"I bought you a chair."
You wouldn't think these 5 little words would make a girl's heart go pitter-patter, but mine sure did!
Almost 2 years ago, my wonderful husband came home one day uttering those words. It seems, one of his customer's had a chair in the back of her truck that she was going to sell on EBay. He started asking her about it and a few minutes later...$60 and SOLD!
We think this might be a 1930's/40's "American Art Deco Speed Chair" by Paul Frankl. A Frenchman, named Jacques Adnet, also produced chairs similar to this one. Or might just be a good old knock-off. There are no markings on the chair so I really don't know for sure.
This was the original upholstery. Lovely isn't it? Some sort of sticky, yucky, vinyl stuff that had a pretty cool pattern to it. I just loved the lines on the chair.
So, a few months later, with gift money I'd saved from Christmas, I purchased this fabric. It was almost a year later before I got the chair reupholstered. This fabric really appealed to me and the colors were perfect for my house. When we got the chair back, my initial reaction was...
"Oh, no, what have I done?"
All I could see was dots and stripes and dots and stripes and MORE dots and stripes!
But then I relaxed, said what's done is done and you know what? Over the next few days, it started to grow on me. You see, I debated using several fabrics (which I'm prone to do) but decided this chair just need one. And I still loved the fabric and it's colors.
I decided what it needed was a big brown pillow to break up all the dots and stripes!
Maybe, this is a bit overkill. I'm mean, really? The pillow is almost as big as the chair! But, I am liking the brown. So, for the time being, my 1930's (maybe) chair has found a home in our computer/video game/music/little-bit-of-everything room.
And to sit beside it, check out this cool little trunk/table I found at Marshall's. It's reminiscent of old, vintage luggage trunks.
Isn't this cool? It was one of those compulsive, spur-of-the-moment purchases. And I'm loving it! Not sure if this will be it's final spot or not.
I'm liking my chair. I found a brown pillow more proportionate in scale to the chair (though I'll probably make another one) and I'm happy.
Plus, my kids LOVE to sit here and play video games so all is well!
And it all started with those sweet little words all women love to hear
(well, maybe just me)...
"I bought you a chair."
Do you have a favorite unconventional gift?
SHARING WITH:
I am laughing so hard! Years ago when we bought our first house, Bryan called me from a business trip to tell me a man in a truck was delivering things he had bought. He had wandered into a furniture/auction house while waiting for an appointment and bought a huge mirror, pictures, antique telephone table and more - all for a song. Boy, did he get a homemade dinner when he got back!
ReplyDeleteI just pictured myself as a kid wearing shorts in the middle of Summer when you said that fabric was vinyl, Sonya! : ) {Shudder}. I love the lines of it and I like the fabric you put on it. I actually thought the larger pillow worked "whimsically" on it with the large ruffle. Especially since those colors are in the fabric. Glad you got to put it to use anyway!
ReplyDeleteI dig the chair, but I also liked the original pattern (just not the fact that is was vinyl).
ReplyDeleteAn unconventional gift? Hmmm. Let me share with you the gift I received for my first Christmas as a married gal.

Well, John-Heath's room is still unfinished. I was all hyped up about getting it done and then BAM! Procrastination hit.
Hope you're doing well. "Talk" to you later.
Oh what a great chair and how neat that he bought it for you. I like the new fabric. It's a happy chair and so that's perfect. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteOh how great! Love the lines of the chair.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing as Kathy. I can just imagine legs sticking to the embossed vinyl as you try to get out of it.. and leaving a lovely imprint! ha-ha
Seriously, I like the new fabric. I really like the bigger pillow, too!

I know what you guys mean about the pillow. You know me, I LOVE big pillows! The bigger the better. But I also know my kids. That pillow would be forever on the floor! That's why I'll save the smaller ones for them to use in this chair.
ReplyDeleteHi Sonya, your chair is beautiful, I love the fabric. A friend is helping me sew window treatment's for my kitchen, I will post them when I get done. I would love to have you look at them, just remember, I am new to sewing.
ReplyDeletehave a great day,
Regina
I really like the fabric. It seems it is just retro looking enough to harmonize with the chair, yet make it look modern. Hugs, Kim
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this chair! The fabric is so fun and the style is amazing. And you put it in my favorite room in your home. :)
ReplyDeleteThat yucky vinyl stuff is called 'naugahyde'!! I remember is very well growing up. I think the appeal was that it was very easy to keep clean. So glad it has not made a come back!!
ReplyDeleteI remember that old fabric ~ never understood why it was used except it was an easy to clean deal. The fabric you chose makes it a happy chair! I know you will all enjoy it. Love the chest too.

I just love it Sonya! I think the fabric is so perfect for the lines of the chair and it helps bring out all of the vintage/retro appeal. The pillow is the perfect addition and does help soften it all. Thanks so much for sharing this at Inspiration Friday! :-)
