Jan's Front Porch - Don't you just love those sleigh bells?
Have you ever thought you may have a split personality when it comes to decorating? This thought has crossed my mind/minds several times before. After taking a look at my Christmas decor, I'd say it's true.
The above photo was taken when I decorated Jan's house for Christmas. Her husband's vintage sleigh bells are quite heavy and have a gorgeous patina. I love the way they look draped over the rocking chair.
My front door.
I've written several times (here, here & here) about my on-going dilemma with color vs. neutral. Multiple patterns vs. serene solids. I'm not sure which one is winning but at the moment they're waging a full-on battle at my house.
Consider the entrance of my house. There, atop my turquoise front door (can't get much more colorful than that!) hangs my favorite wreath, full of all sorts of natural elements including pine cones, grapevine and burlap.
Another wreath near the front door. Ignore the tangle of green wire.
When I see some of the more neutral themed Christmas trees, I absolutely adore them!
So I told myself I was going to make a bunch of natural ornaments and have at least one simple, natural, neutrally dressed tree in my house. Well, this is it. A 2' tree on the dresser in my master bedroom. With not a single handmade ornament to be found! Though several are about 40 years old with only a touch of their original color showing. The larger ornament on the left is dated 1982 and reads "First Christmas Together".
The main tree/trees in our living room are covered in brightly colored ornaments. Many being extremely sentimental, including every "photo" ornament my kids ever made. And you know what...I love it!
What's girl to do when she can't decide between glitter and burlap?
The largest Nativity I have holds a place of honor as the centerpiece on the dining room table. My Dad gave this Nativity to us years ago and only about a third of the pieces are displayed. I really like the way the simplicity of the Nativity is complemented by all the natural elements.
Here you see me trying to get creative with my photography. A bit disconcerting seeing the reflection of yourself in the silver ornaments as you try NOT to fall off the chair while taking photos with the tripod sitting on the table!
I'm ready for the crazy, business of the season to calm down and make room for a slower pace.
Maybe this yearning for a more natural Christmas decor is actually a yearning for a focus that's on the true meaning of Christmas. I pray that is true for each of us as we prepare for this precious holiday.
Christmas Blessings!
Sonya
Amen Sonya. It is all about the true meaning...I do the same thing too...I have natural elements and then I have my color...I love them both too!
ReplyDeleteLove your nativity...it is beautiful!
Merry Christmas my friend!

Oh I do love both also. It is so hard not to have both, and yes the true meaning of Christmas is what really counts. Your decor is stunning. May you and your family have a very Blessed and Merry Christmas. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteAll your decorations are beautiful! You know me and simplicity...yet I LOVE the colorful tree(s) in your living area as well as the neutral one in the master bedroom. What did you decide about the mantle? Photos, please. :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I absolutely LOVE that nativity. It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteaw I love the Nativity scene this year! The sweet little trees make it look like a forest lol!

OMG Google let me comment on your page! HALLELUJAH! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a hard decision, but I love both your natural and colorful trees, Sonya! I think if you do more than one tree you can get both looks to satisfy your split personality. : )
ReplyDeleteWithout the true meaning of Christmas, there is no Christmas. Your nativity is gorgeous, as is your decor.
ReplyDeleteI shared all my nativities yesterday ... to me they are the most beautiful part of a decor.
Merry Christmas

The problem is that I like everything! I can appreciate and be inspired by both sides of the coin in decorating with and without lots of color...so it is a bit difficult to choose!
ReplyDeleteI know, I know--such a hard decision! I love that nativity scene, the white makes it so classic.
ReplyDeleteIt is a hard decision especially when you do the decorating..It's all beautiful..
ReplyDeleteI have had both....simple and over the top...colorful and only two colors...they all made me happy at different times...
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on the split personality dilemma. I see neutral homes and go ahhh! Then I see colorful and go ahhh! I go back and forth in my own home. I'll do a room in neutrals then start thinking I need a little color. So I never feel like a room is pulled together, more like pulled in all directions! After that lengthy ramble, just want to say, your home is beautiful and I love both directions you went with your Christmas decor! :)
ReplyDeleteEverything looks beautiful, Sonja! I dreamed last night that I decorated in white, silver & gold. NOT! I do think it's gorgeous though. I've really had that vs color going through my mind too. Ahhh, it's too late for any changes this year ~ we'll see what I'm feeling next year. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's all flying by too fast! I want it to slow down so I can enjoy a peaceful holiday season and yes, focus on the real reason for it.
