Way back in August of 2011 I won a 16x20 rolled canvas from
Even though the giveaway was in August I had until December 31 to place my order. It was a good thing because it took me until Dec 30 to make up my mind!
I decided on a vintage map for my work room. I googled photos of vintage maps, found one I liked and placed the order. The actual canvas is 16x20 but the image of the map is 13x20.
To mount the map I used an old 18x22 frame, oatmeal colored fabric, 1 white foam core board (cut 18x22 to fit the frame), 1 black foam core board (cut 13x20 to fit the map), masking tape, hot glue and spray glue.
I wrapped the fabric around the white foam core securing it to the back with masking tape. Not pretty but it works.
The map was secured to the black foam core with spray glue.
I chose the black foam core to mount the map because
1.) I liked the way it looked and
2.) I had it on hand.
The map was then centered, mounted to the fabric covered board with hot glue then mounted in the frame.
The dark brown frame had been painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, distressed and waxed with a light brown paste wax.
And here it hangs as part of the gallery wall in my work room/sewing room.
Now, here's the fun part!
Each pin represents a customer of Beyond the Screen Door! My youngest daughter took my invoices, looked up every town I had shipped to on her iPod and marked it on the map. We tried to be as accurate as possible with a map that still says Indian Territory for Oklahoma.
So, if I have shipped an item to you...you're on my map!
I think this turned out so cool! A lovely reminder of your support!
Thank you!
After it was all completed my husband said I should have distressed the edges of the map. Love that idea! Couldn't he have suggested it just a bit sooner? Oh, well, I'm sure I'll get around to it one of these days!
Thank you so much for following Beyond the Screen Door!

ReplyDeleteThat turned out great, Sonya! I love it and what a great idea to mount it onto foam board and fabric. It looks really good on your wall and I love the idea of using the pins to show where you've shipped your creations to.
ReplyDeleteLove this, beautiful and purposeful! Following you on Linky...hope you can follow back.

Hi Sonya, the map in your sewing/crafting room is a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeletehave a great day,
Regina
How funny is this...I received a canvas from them back in August too and had to 12/31...I ordered mine on 12/31:) I got a b/w wedding pic of my daughter and SIL on the avenue of oaks....turned out great...now I just need to frame it. Your map looks wonderful...love how you framed it and the pins are perfect(awesome idea).
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Linda
That looks awesome! I love the frame. What a fun idea--to use your customers on the map! It made me laugh when I read it still had "OK Territory!" Ha!
ReplyDeleteSonya, what a great idea! The map looks wonderful as a part of your gallery...and you turned it into an amazing memory of all the places you've shipped to. Now, that's inspirational!
ReplyDeleteThat looks just gorgeous Sonya! I'm so loving all the maps I'm seeing these days and yours looks so great on that beautiful gallery wall. Well done! :-)
ReplyDeleteVanessa
I pinned this, i just love it so much! and I finally got around to putting a Pin It button on my dashbaord, so now I'm even more obsessed :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece of art! I love it and it looks so pretty on your gallery wall.
ReplyDeleteI also like the idea of pinning all of your customers.
hugs

This is stunning. LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI adore maps. Yours looks great in that frame.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of old maps. For distressing...how about making a strong tea solution and put in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the edges or where ever you want "instant aging" to occur. I have used this method and it works great. You may have to do it a couple of times depending on the intensity of your tea bath. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteSonya,
ReplyDeleteThat looks super! I have been looking for a detailed map of Russia to use as a background for Liv's Sr pictures to map where she's been and where she is now. I love this idea!
Love the map and the grouping on the wall. What a great idea to place pins on the map to represent your customers.
ReplyDeleteI love old maps! This is a great idea, and so easy to personalize. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethat is so sweet! I love the map, but the pins make is super special!

Love the subtle colors here. The pin heads enhance the coloring of the map so nicely.
ReplyDeleteHi Sonya, just came over from BJ's. LOVE her burlap runner. Do/can you make one that is shorter than the 92 inches? I would want it for my kitchen table that is 60 in. long but would want the ruffle to hang over the edge. Please let me know what the cost would be. Thanks so much!!!! XO, Pinky PS, now following you.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea...I love maps as interactive art!

What a wonderful idea. I really like the look of the map and how you put it in the frame anyway, but I simply adore how you added the pins. What great meaning to you as well. Thanks for sharing this great inspiration with everyone.
ReplyDeleteOMG that is sooooo cool Sonya and I think I see my pink Pin on there!:) LOVE it!!!!

What a fantastic idea. I actually wanted to do something similar because I'm English, and I love Geography, so I wanted to make a map, and mark on it the lovely bloggers who I connect with (most of whom are in the States). So now you've given me a great idea on how to achieve this.
ReplyDeleteFollowing you on the new Linky tool - Fiona @justpaintitwhite.blogspot.com
