The damask pattern has been around a long time!

Isn't this luxurious?
Who can resist it? We probably all have this pattern somewhere in our homes.
Remember Tricia's amazing bathroom?
Just off the top of my head I know I have a damask pattern on two bulletin boards, a pair of curtains in my daughter's room, the quilt on my bed, a tote bag...and I'm sure there's more but it's just not coming to mind at the moment.
When I took a quick look at damask patterns on Pinterest there were a few that caught my eye.
iPhone GelaSkin
A damask wedding cake
Even a tattoo labeled damask!
Can't say I recommend it but it did catch my eye.
Beverly at Mominizer has done some amazing wall treatments using damask stencils.
So here's my dilemma. I've pronounced damask one way for years! Ever since my college days studying Interior Design.
But here lately I've been wondering if I'm pronouncing it the right way.
(Maybe too much HGTV and listening to those amazing Canadian designers.)
I looked up the definition of damask and this was the first one I found.

Yes! This is the way I've always pronounced it! My heart did a little happy dance!
It didn't dance long.
damask - noun \ˈda-məsk\
1. a firm lustrous fabric (as of linen, cotton, silk or rayon) made with flat patterns in a satin weave or a plain woven ground on jacquard looms.
MerriamWebster.com
damask - noun ˈdæməsk

Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary
damask - noun (dam'usk)
1. a reversible fabric of linen, silk, cotton or wool woven with patterns.
Random House Unabridged Dictionary
According to these four definitions it could go either way!
So, the question of the day is...
How do YOU pronounce damask?

Yippee! Thanks for showing my damask bathroom ;) I totally say the end like "ask" in a bad mixed up Texas accent. Glad to know I am not that wrong! XO Bev
ReplyDeleteI've always said dam-usk, Sonya! I'm glad to see there are several ways you could say it though! I have those wall stencils and I have yet to get those projects done.
ReplyDeleteDam-usk here! I NEED that iPhone case!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Love the pictures. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the da-mask category. I think that was the way I first heard it pronounced and it stuck with me. Love your examples here and I love how luxurious it makes a room feel. xo Diana

ReplyDeletedaughter and grand call it da mask...
Anyway you say it, it's gorgeous.
I'm with NanaDiana, BUT, I have to say your question reminded me of the scene from the movie Shawshank Redemption. Do you know it? Where they are discussing the Alexandre Dumas novel, The Count of Monte Cristo? Sometimes I just can't help myself!
ReplyDeleteLOL!! I personally avoid pronouncing this word in ANY way. I feel like it will be always wrong. LOL But I do groove the design. And that tattoo, kinda crazy cool! Super fun post, Sonya!
ReplyDeleteHey Sonya,
ReplyDeleteDam-usk...I even tought my husband what it was because I love it so much! lol
Maybe Dam-usk is the Okie pronunciation?
Looking forward to more posts!
Rose :)
I say it "da-mask" and have never known if that's right.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a wall in my bedroom in the print but I don't think my husband would go for it =(

I love da-mask! That's how I pronounce it. By the way, I also love your framed map you posted a few posts back. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've always said da-mask! Love it. Never knew anyone would tattoo a da-mask on their shoulder? This was a cute post - enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday's Best!
ReplyDeleteI love the da-mask fabrics and wall paper that you've shown. I'm Canadian, but honestly, I don't think I've heard anyone pronounce it. I don't have a TV.
ReplyDeleteSo da-mask is how I say it, I guess it's not really wrong, is it.
Hugs, Cindy
