I love the look of this rose petal pillow!
And honestly, it is really quite simple to make!
Simple, yet a little time consuming.
The inspiration for this pillow came from a post featuring frugal
ideas. The item made was a tea towel embellished with rose petals.
Both items had been purchased from the dollar store.
If anyone knows who posted this idea please let me know
so I can give credit to whom credit is due!
(Thank you, TexNan, for letting me know that
Lindsay at Living with Lindsay was my inspiration!
Check out the March 25, 2010 post for her original idea!)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I chose to make a 14"x20"pillow.
I used a white canvas/denim fabric and cut one piece 14"x20".
Note: I make most of my pillows for feather inserts.
Because of their tendency to sink or crush I ALWAYS
cut my pillow forms exactly to the size of the pillow
and don't allow extra for seam allowances.
This makes for a "tighter" pillow!
If you're using a regular poly pillow add 1" to length and width
to accommodate a 1/2" seam.
NOTE TO SELF: Next time you plan a tutorial using rose petals,
buy multiple colors, NOT JUST WHITE!
Sorry this is so hard to see!
This look is achieved by sewing layered rows of petals
from the bottom of the pillow to the top.
(Always start from the bottom of the fabric)
Each row consists of one layer of petals placed
side by side across the fabric and a second layer,
with alternating petals, placed on top of the first.
For instance: My pillow took 10 petals for the first layer
and 9 petals for the second layer.
Each row then consisted of 19 rose petals.
When your first row is sewn in place, determine how many vertical
rows you will need by overlapping petals to the desired look.
For instance: My pillow took 10 rows of petals
19 petals in each row
total of 190 petals!
Continue sewing each row in place being VERY careful to stay level.
Now for the back of the pillow!
Whenever I can, I like to add a special detail
to the backside of a pillow.
The back of this pillow is constructed from 2 pieces of fabric,
hemmed and overlapped about 2",
to form a sham-style opening.
I then added another row of petals at the opening
along with a string tie (not shown) for closing.
For this row of petals I did 3 layers equaling a total of 29 petals.
Now for the tricky part.
Place right sides together, pin and sew, being
VERY CAREFUL to not catch any of the petals in your seam!
Easier said than done!
Turn right side out, iron if needed, insert pillow form
and you're done!
Whew, I'm exhausted!
Honestly, writing the tutorial was WAY harder
than making the pillow!
Isn't this pillow adorable?
I'm thinking how cute this would be on a round pillow!!!!
My second oldest daughter, who just moved into her
own apartment, came by and said, "I want that!".
So Sorry!
This pillow is for one of my
Beyond the Screen Door Friends!
(I guess I'll be making another one!)
