This process if really quite simple but it's a mess! The body of the pillow is a home dec fabric that has the look of high-end burlap. (If there is such a thing!) The shaggy ruffle consists of a multitude of (meaning I don't have the faintest idea how many) pieces! There are approximately 10-12 different patterns all cut at 3.5" long x 1" wide. For this pillow, my color scheme was black, brown, tan, cream and a bright green.
The pieces are sewn around the edge of the front of the pillow just like you would sew in a regular ruffle. This is NOT a neat an orderly procedure. Overlapping, layering, and bunching the pieces as you sew will give you a fuller look. The fuller the better. Don't worry about neat and precise.
Place as many pieces in the corners as you feel you can. It helps the corners of the pillow to be fuller when finished.
Place the back and front of the pillow cover, right sides together and sew closed, being VERY careful to keep the shaggy pieces out of your seam. This particular pillow has a zipper back closure but any closure you prefer will work.
The embellishment here is a layered fabric flower. Black burlap, green lace, copper silk and green tulle are all gathered and glued together. The center black and tan fabric is twisted to form the "rose" effect and glued in place. The flower is then pinned to the pillow cover.
I may have to make another one of these! The shaggy ruffle lends a whimsical feel but the colors are quite sophisticated. A great combination!
What do you think? Do you have scraps of fabric just waiting to become a Shaggy Ruffled Pillow?
Have a Blessed Day!

Looks GORGEOUS, Sonya. What more can I say? EVERTHING you do is gorgeous. If people doubt it, they MUST look at your tab above in your "Gallery" header. As I have told you: I wish I had a mansion, not to be rich, but only so that I would have an abundance of windows so that YOU can design the drapes/curtains and matching pillows too. You are great. You know I love your "Ruffle" incorporations in your designs!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Gloria
Sonya: Do you have a shop on Etsy? I know your designs and so are many bloggers sell on Etsy, AND many upscale visitors are on Etsy, so I think you should start a shop there. Bloggers would LOVE your upscale creations! Your "ruffles" -- as I have NUMEROUSLY times mentioned -- are TO DIE FOR! Please sell on ETSY!!!

I ADORE this pillow. I am thinking I may make one in seasonal colors for Christmas, wouldn't that be adorable??? You didn't tell us much about how you made the flower, any instructions to it?
ReplyDeleteOhhh....what a cute little pillow! Love the little rosette in the corner too! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteKristen
I saw this for sale in your shop and thought how pretty it was. Thanks for showing us how you made it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gloria! Maybe one day I will open an Etsy shop! Along with my custom jobs, my little shop here is just about all I can manage at the moment! I sure appreciate your encouragement!
ReplyDeleteI probably do have enough to do one and then 6 more after that, Sonay! : ) Love it and it definitely lends that whimsical look. How great this would look with a bunch of other pilows on a sofa or bed! Did you put a piece of fabric down as you went along sewing and just sew it in place, then place another piece? If I did one of these, it would have to be in the Winter, when I probably do more projects then any other time and actually have the patience to stick with them!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this pop up in my google reader, I immediately knew it was yours before I even saw the author! You have such an amazing and distinctive style and I adore this pillow. I hope you don't mind, but I will be cutting some scraps today!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the pillow! Love the colors and use of patterns:)
ReplyDeleteOmigosh! This would be perfect for all those lovely strips of silk one finds at high-end fabric shops. Guess I need to start collecting those again--with an eye to color.

ReplyDeleteNew to your blog.....fantastic pillow idea. Wondering if the ruffle strips will fray, did you use fray check or fabrics that won't fray or maybe just figuring it won't be a problem. Can't wait to look through all the great things I have missed.
ReplyDeleteThis really works for me! I just love it! Thank you for sharing it today. I'm adding myself as a follower.
