Finding that Unexpected Design Idea!

Do you find yourself constantly looking for design ideas? A trip to a local antique mall or retail shop? An hour spent soaking up ideas throughout blogland? Magazines, books, even movies?

I love these sweet Bentwood chairs! Big brother and little sister chairs.
This small room is full of unexpected design ideas.
In a previous life, this space was your average back yard patio. Keeping within the footprint of the concrete, walls, windows and doors were added to create a playroom. Now, a few years later, it has a more mature look and has become a comfortable hangout space for two young teenagers.
And who doesn't want a coffee table like this one?
First, notice the window treatment and it's hardware. Two completely different, patterned panels hung together as one. This is definitely unexpected, but I like it! Look how the industrial hardware has been installed, mounted from the ceiling. Also, notice in the first picture, how the simple windows were highlighted with a bit of paint.

The concrete floor was painted a vibrant turquoise and stenciled. And take a look even further into the kitchen. The plain, boring side of the base cabinet was jazzed up with a frame and a great patterned fabric or paper.
A closer look at this awesome coffee table. A zebra rug positioned at an angle.
The family photos on the left are hung from a metal wire and magnet system. The artwork, which resembles a chalkboard, is actually a large canvas, painted by the family, with words and phrases that speak to them.
A peek into the kitchen shows more inspiring ideas.
Glass front cabinets with a beautiful interior color, glass shelves and lights. Cabinets painted with a contrast between the door fronts and base. Unusual hardware.
I love discovering that unexpected design idea that makes me want to try it myself! Don't you?

Hope you found some inspiration today!

  1. Hi Sonya! It's been so long - life is busy busy busy. I miss blogland though. I love your inspiration room - the photo up top with the sofa, pillows and mismatching panels are so eclectic and FUN! The chalk board pic makes me feel like I'm in a coffee or tea house in Cambridge, one with a 'hip' vibe...

Thanks for the inspiration! Hope all is well with you and your family.

  3. This space really is 'different' then what I usually see in my magazines and blogs that I visit, and it certainly IS unexpected! Much more modern and hip and I can see it as the perfect 'hangout' for the younger crowd! Inspiration surrounds us if we look hard enough!
