Ready made window treatments.
PROS: Convenient. Easily available. Affordable.
Panels and Scarf purchased at Tuesday Morning.
CONS: Often not the right style, color or length. And sometimes...just plain boring!
But that doesn't mean they have to stay that way! Using the ready made curtains shown above, we were able to lengthen, customize and considerably UP the cuteness factor for these windows!
White damask panels are roman shades custom made by the previous homeowner.
The windows in this master bedroom are quite tall. We needed to mount the hardware at 120". The chocolate brown stripe panels only measured 96" in length. By using one 6 yard green, scarf valance to create a "skirt" across the bottom we were able to lengthen the panels with enough left over to puddle on the floor.
Each skirt consisted of 1.5 widths of fabric. The green scarf valance was cut into 6 pieces, 1 yard each. Two of these pieces were then cut in half, creating 4 halves, which were sewn to a whole width creating 4 skirts @ 1.5 widths each. These were then gathered, hemmed and attached along the hem line of the brown panels.
Here you can see the lining and inter lining of the ready made panels.
By attaching the skirt along the hem line I was able to fold the hem over the seam and hide it. I added a lining to the skirt (not shown) but it isn't necessary.
The ball fringe (shown below) was sewn along the seam line of the skirt and panels.
The newly painted curtain rings were attached using drapery hooks.
A glimpse of the headboard that was the inspiration for the paint treatment on the hardware.
This is such a viable option. The ready made panels were lined and interlined! Another consideration is the savings by buying the 6yd length of fabric in the form of the scarf. This is often MUCH less expensive than 6 yds of fabric. (Plus, in my opinion, it's a much better use of the fabric than originally intended!)
So, the next time you're on the hunt for window treatments, consider mixing up some ready made panels for a completely custom look!
SHARING WITH:
I love them - totally agree that sometimes the modification is the easiest/less expensive route and can so be modified. I love adding trims and things to make them "fit" the room.
ReplyDeleteWow that came out very nice! You can customize a curtain panel that looks completely custom~I think getting lined panels is important to the custom look though, which is what you have shown. Nice job, and the hardware looks great too.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Love the tiny puddle at the bottom too! You just hand scrunched the ruffle?
ReplyDeleteOh my, sooo pretty! They look amazing. ;)
ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful weekend.

Beautiful, Sonya! What a great idea to use a scarf for the extra fabric. That trim is so fun, too!
ReplyDeleteThose are very pretty!!! Great idea!

Thank you so much for this post. I have some Waverly La Petite Ferme spice drapes that are too short for my new home. I hated to let them go but didn't have any idea how to make them usuable here. Wonderful solution!

These window treatments turned out beautifully! (Not that I had any doubts you could create gorgeous things from store-bought items.) I really like the brown stripe. :)
ReplyDeleteThey look fabulous. Love the colors and the trims. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip, your curtains look beautiful...as always! I wish I could sew, I have a machine, I need to get it out and practice.
ReplyDeletehave a great Mother's Day!

Those turned out great and it gave me a few ideas on how I might improved my ready made panel that are going in the living room.

I've done this very thing on ho-hum, short draperies that I inherited. These look wonderful and I heartily agree the green looks better than its original intent. Hugs and Happy Mom's Day!
ReplyDeleteCool ideas. I'm always so tempted to just buy off the rack for the ease of it and then so disappointed by the ho-humness of it. Thanks for sharing. ~CJ
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I've done this myself but yours looks so much better! I think it's because you gathered it. Love it.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I would never think of using the green fabric as you did...just perfect to add to the original drape and spice it up.
