I love using bulletin boards. Bulletin/Memory boards that hold everything from photos to creative inspiration to those precious daily pieces of our lives like report cards, notes from family, kids artwork, etc.
One day it struck me that I was really tired of this bulletin board that hangs just outside my kitchen. Just like that I whipped it down and started taking it apart.
Did I have time to be doing this? Of course not!
So there it stayed...leaning up against the wall...torn apart...for days...until I finally had the time to finish it.
Is anyone else prone to episodes of spontaneous deconstruction?
I decided to use one of my stash of coffee sacks to recover the bulletin board. Here you can see where I have cut it open showing both the front and back sides of the sack. I washed the coffee sack and ironed the burlap before I began.
The board itself was just a piece of cardboard that had been layered with batting and covered with fabric.
I recovered the board with the coffee sack by simply stapling the edges to the cardboard.
Figuring out the correct placement of the ribbons to form the criss-cross pattern is the hardest part of this project. I'm sorry I don't have a simple equation for you. It all depends on the distance you want between your ribbons, the size of the board, the size of the ribbons, etc. It's really trial and error. But you figure it out eventually.

To create the quilting effect I sewed an X with upholstery thread where the ribbons crossed. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this (perhaps using brads?) but I was in a do-it-now mood and this is what I had on hand.
I used upholstery tacks as a decorative accent where the ribbons crossed. The tacks were a tad too long so I cut them off using wire cutters and glued them in place with hot glue.
Here you can see the back side of the board. Quite tacky but who's going to see it but me?...and you?
I painted & distressed the frame and then began putting in the photos.
I love digital cameras but I am SO behind in printing pictures! I desperately need to update the family photos around my house! I mean, honestly, It's sad how far behind I am!

But some photos will stay there no matter how old they are!

I love this Sonya. I was looking for some more coffee sacks around here so I could make one of these myself for the laundry room. I forgot where I put mine LOL.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Great update for the bulletin board.
ReplyDeleteI love memo boards, too, Sonya! And chalkboards. I wish I had more wall space! : ) This turned out wonderfully. I did choke on my coffee that you were removing that great looking toile, but I like the look the coffee sack gives, too. I have been trying to be good about printing out up-to-date pictures, but my picture printer is not cooperating. I've been trying to just send them to CVS {which is basically down the road from me} and have them printed there.
ReplyDeleteFun idea and it looks great. Enjoyed the how to. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Sonya, this is so cute! Yes, I absolutely spontaneously deconstruct things when I have NO time! I hope everything is going well over in your corner of the world.
